My Students Hacked Their Way Into The Zoo

Where we hope to send YouTube viewers.

Taking a cue from Google's 20% Initiative, I decided to let my students use their class time as they saw fit and let them hack their own education. Two students got a field trip to the zoo approved, and if all goes as planned, next week we will be meeting the Oregon Zoo's Education Coordinator and show her student-created PSAs for some of the zoo's endangered animals. Hopefully, these will one day link to the Oregon Zoo's YouTube Channel and perhaps to fundraising sites for endangered animals or the zoo itself.

I am learning along with the students. My example Orangutan PSA via YouTube Creator Studio.

Until this point I had never considered using YouTube as a teaching tool, however, as the students worked on their projects I was convinced of its potential. As I asked students to reflect on what website helped them the most in pursuing their interests the overwhelming answer was YouTube.  As a result, all students are now creating a PSA cobbled together by using the Creative Commons section of YouTube's Creator Studio.

I hope to blog more about this as we head for the zoo. Stay tuned and wish us luck. A lot has to line up for us to actually make the trip!
